Key Benefits

  • Supports normal red blood cell and haemoglobin formation
  • Contributes to normal oxygen transport
  • Reference-standard iron bioavailability
  • Very cost-effective
  • Water-soluble for liquid formats

Uses & Applications

Typical applications: Mineral supplementation, premix, tablets/capsules.

  • Iron capsules and tablets
  • Prenatal and women's multivitamins
  • Multimineral premixes
  • Fortified cereals and flours
  • Children's chewables and gummies
  • Fortified beverage and nutrition powders

How to Use / Dosage

  • Typical daily intake: Typically 30–65 mg/day elemental iron (dried ferrous sulfate ~30–32% Fe; heptahydrate ~20% Fe)
  • Typical use level: 0.005–0.1% in fortified foods; 20–60% in iron tablet cores
  • Formulation tip: Calculate dosage on elemental mineral content (see CoA), not on total salt weight.
  • Weigh accurately and pre-blend small quantities with a carrier (e.g. maltodextrin, MCC or rice flour) for uniform distribution.
  • Final dosage should be based on the lot-specific Certificate of Analysis, the target serving size and the rules of your destination market.

Solubility & Formulation

Freely soluble in water (heptahydrate); practically insoluble in ethanol and oils

Storage & Handling

Store tightly closed in a cool, dry place; protect from moisture and air to prevent oxidation (browning).. Keep container tightly closed; use clean, dry utensils. Shelf life is typically 24 months in unopened original packaging (see CoA).

Regulatory Note

Permitted source of iron in dietary supplements and fortified foods in the US, EU (Directive 2002/46/EC / Reg. 1925/2006 lists) and India (FSSAI); FDA requires the iron accidental-overdose warning on solid supplements. Verify form-specific listings and maximum levels in the destination market. Ferrous sulfate is GRAS (21 CFR 184.1315).

Diet suitability: Generally vegetarian. This product is supplied as a raw ingredient for further manufacturing and is not a finished consumer product. The buyer is responsible for ensuring the ingredient, its use level and all label claims comply with the regulations of the destination market (e.g. FDA, EFSA, FSSAI, Health Canada, TGA).

Caution & Disclaimer

  • Iron can be harmful in excess: keep out of reach of children (accidental iron overdose is dangerous); US UL 45 mg/day elemental iron
  • Commonly causes GI upset, constipation and dark stools
  • Reduces absorption of levothyroxine, tetracyclines, quinolones and levodopa – separate dosing by 2–4 h
  • Not for people with haemochromatosis or iron overload unless medically advised
  • Reactive: can cause rancidity and discolouration in foods; heptahydrate oxidises in moist air
