Sodium selenite is an inorganic selenium salt widely used in food fortification, infant formula and supplements. It is inexpensive and effective but must be handled as a toxic concentrate and pre-diluted before use.

Supplied as a mineral salt / chelate for supplement, premix and fortification use; elemental mineral content is declared on the CoA.

How to Use / Dosage

  • Typical daily intake: 50–200 µg/day selenium (anhydrous sodium selenite ~45% Se)
  • Typical use level: Used as 0.1–1% Se triturations; 0.0005–0.05% in finished premixes
  • Formulation tip: Calculate dosage on elemental mineral content (see CoA), not on total salt weight.
  • Weigh accurately and pre-blend small quantities with a carrier (e.g. maltodextrin, MCC or rice flour) for uniform distribution.
  • Final dosage should be based on the lot-specific Certificate of Analysis, the target serving size and the rules of your destination market.

Freely soluble in water; insoluble in ethanol and oils

Storage & Handling

Store tightly locked in a cool, dry place, away from acids and reducing agents; restricted access.. Keep container tightly closed; use clean, dry utensils. Shelf life is typically 24 months in unopened original packaging (see CoA).

Regulatory Note

Sodium selenite is permitted in EU supplements and foods (Directive 2002/46/EC, Reg. 1925/2006) and in US infant formula (21 CFR 107.100) and supplements. Transport as a hazardous substance in pure form.

Diet suitability: Generally vegetarian. This product is supplied as a raw ingredient for further manufacturing and is not a finished consumer product. The buyer is responsible for ensuring the ingredient, its use level and all label claims comply with the regulations of the destination market (e.g. FDA, EFSA, FSSAI, Health Canada, TGA).

Caution & Disclaimer

  • Narrow margin between need and excess: US UL 400 µg/day, EFSA UL 255 µg/day selenium from all sources
  • Excess intake can cause selenosis (hair and nail loss, garlic breath, GI upset)
  • Dose accurately using diluted premixes; ensure homogeneous mixing
  • Highly toxic concentrate (acute toxicity) – use pre-diluted triturations and PPE
  • Can react with ascorbic acid and reducing agents in premixes
