Carbonyl iron is highly pure, microfine spherical elemental iron produced by decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl. Because it dissolves gradually in stomach acid it offers a high iron payload with a comparatively favourable safety margin in accidental ingestion.
Supplied as a mineral salt / chelate for supplement, premix and fortification use; elemental mineral content is declared on the CoA.
GUTINS Iron Carbonyl Iron — granulated / direct-compression grade is offered for manufacturers, formulators and brands. Specification: granulated / direct-compression grade; form / technology: Salt / chelate; diet suitability: Generally vegetarian.

Key Benefits
- Supports normal red blood cell formation
- Very high iron content (~98%) for small tablets
- Gradual dissolution may improve GI tolerance
- Stable, non-reactive in dry foods
- Wider safety margin than iron salts in accidental overdose
Uses & Applications
Typical applications: Mineral supplementation, premix, tablets/capsules.
- High-potency iron tablets
- Flour and cereal fortification
- Prenatal supplements
- Multimineral premixes
- Chewable iron products
How to Use / Dosage
- Typical daily intake: Typically 18–65 mg/day elemental iron (carbonyl iron ~98% Fe)
- Typical use level: 0.002–0.05% in fortified flours and cereals; 5–20% in tablet cores
- Formulation tip: Calculate dosage on elemental mineral content (see CoA), not on total salt weight.
- Weigh accurately and pre-blend small quantities with a carrier (e.g. maltodextrin, MCC or rice flour) for uniform distribution.
- Final dosage should be based on the lot-specific Certificate of Analysis, the target serving size and the rules of your destination market.
Solubility & Formulation
Insoluble in water and oils; dissolves in gastric/dilute mineral acids
Storage & Handling
Store tightly closed in a cool, dry place; protect from moisture (oxidation) and keep away from ignition sources.. Keep container tightly closed; use clean, dry utensils. Shelf life is typically 24 months in unopened original packaging (see CoA).
Regulatory Note
Elemental (carbonyl) iron is GRAS in the US (21 CFR 184.1375) and permitted as elemental iron in EU supplements and fortified foods. FDA iron overdose warning applies; verify form listings in destination markets.
Diet suitability: Generally vegetarian. This product is supplied as a raw ingredient for further manufacturing and is not a finished consumer product. The buyer is responsible for ensuring the ingredient, its use level and all label claims comply with the regulations of the destination market (e.g. FDA, EFSA, FSSAI, Health Canada, TGA).
Caution & Disclaimer
- Iron can be harmful in excess: keep out of reach of children (accidental iron overdose is dangerous); US UL 45 mg/day elemental iron
- Reduces absorption of levothyroxine, tetracyclines, quinolones and levodopa – separate dosing by 2–4 h
- Not for people with haemochromatosis or iron overload unless medically advised
- Fine metal powder: avoid dust generation and ignition sources during handling
For manufacturing, formulation and professional use only. Not for direct consumption in concentrated form. Keep out of reach of children.
